Amity University Gurgaon participated in Workshop at CIEP – Winter University of BELC 2015

Amity University Gurgaon participated in two weeks WORKSHOP AT CIEP- Winter University of BELC 2015 from 16th to 28th Feb 2015 which was organized at the CIEP, Sèvres, France. Dr. (Mrs.) S. Arul, Dean, Faculty of Arts,Head of Institution, Amity School of Languages, Professor of represented university to attend this two week workshop. Inaugural lecture were given by Mme. Luba JURGENSON, writer and translator and Mr. Bernard MAGNIER,journalist and editor.



The CIEP –International Center for Pedagogic Studies (http://www.ciep.fr/belc)is a key public operator under the auspices of the French Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Research. It is in addition the main operating partner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development. The Winter University of BELC imparts training in teaching French language and civilization which is recognized internationally. There were participants from all over the world.

Training was imparted on two modules:-

1. Integrating ICT in teaching French asa foreign language: uses and resources
This module has sensitized us to the design methodology and criteria of quality of a video capsule. We were provided with digital tools that are used to make a video capsule for flipped learning.

The core learning were :
  • The use of interactive smart board
  • The use of audiovisual documents, authentic downloaded “raw”documents and online resources to render the language classroom teaching dynamic
2. Animating classroom activities while teaching French as a foreign language
This module gave in depth understanding on:
  •  manage and lead activities while teaching French as a foreign language
  • form groups after identifying and taking into account different learner profiles
  • optimize communication by multiplying the need and desire to communicate with activities embedded in various contexts
  • develop group dynamics
  • provide clear instructions
  • develop learner autonomy
  • guide self structuring of knowledge and skills
This training will certainly help us make the classroom atmosphere more relaxed and the teaching most relevant and learner-centric. Furthermore, this workshop provided an excellent opportunity to meet and share the experience with Professors of several nationalities who teach French as a foreign language in various countries including France says (Mrs.) S. Arul.

Apart from the workshops following discussion forum happened at workshop:
  • presentations on the resources available at the documentation center of CIEP
  • round table on“Resources for Teaching of French” with representatives from TV5 World (a French TV channel televised all over the world), from RFI – Radio France Inter and from the revue “Le français dans lemonde”
  • round table on “Frenchin the world: policies and players” with representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development, International Organization of Francophone countries, French Institute and Alliance Française
  • Meetings with publication houses which presented latest text books for teaching French as a foreign language.

National Conference on “INNOVATIONS IN COMPUTING & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY” COGNITION-2015 in Amity University, Gurgaon

Two days national conference on “INNOVATIONS IN COMPUTING & INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY”,COGNITION-2015 was held on 25-26 February, 2015 at Auditorium,B-Block, Amity University Gurgaon.It was organized by Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Amity School of Engineering & Technology, Amity University Gurgaon.


The Conference was organized with the aim to bring together innovative academicians, researchers, scientists, industry experts and scholar students in the field of Computer Science and Information Technology to share and disseminate original research ideas and developments. The Conference was focused on key areas of Cryptography and Network Security, Algorithm Design, Image Processing, Soft Computing, Advanced Networking, Theory of Computation, Software Engineering and other relevant domains.

In the inaugural ceremony, Conference Director Maj. Gen. V.K. Narang (Retd.) welcomed all the speakers, dignitaries and participants and also highlighted the theme of the conference.


Hon’ble Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof.(Dr.) Padmakali Banerjee, in her opening remarks mentioned the month of February as historic for Amity University Gurgaon because the first convocation of the university also held in this month. She also discussed about the achievements made by the Amity University Gurgaon.

Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. (Dr.) P.B Sharma, during his address, emphasized on the importance of innovations and research in a university. He thanks all the guest speakers and participants for joining the conference and gave his best wishes for the success of conference.

Hon’ble Chancellor , Sh. Aseem K.Chauhan, conveyed his words of wisdom and best wishes for the success of the conference.

The eminent Chief Guest Prof.(Dr.) K.K. Biswas, Emeritus Professor, IIT Delhi, along with VC and Pro VC –AUG declared the conference open. Chief Guest delivered a talk on the topic
“Automated Human Activity Recognition from Video Clips”.During the talk he illustrated how monitoring of human being activities can be automated. He also discussed the important applications of the same.

Prof. (Dr.) Nasib Singh Gill, from M.D.University, Rohtak, delivered the Key Note address
“Glimpse of Innovations in Computing & Information Technology”. He suggested many target areas for innovation and research such as Internet of Things (IoT), Mobile Clouds,Extreme data management, Cyber Security etc.

Two expert sessions were conducted during the first day of conference. The first session was based on the theme “Advancements in Information Technology” and chaired by Prof. (Dr.) Nasib Singh Gill.During this session Dr. Jitendra Shah, Senior Scientist, GIS Lab, IIT Bombay delivered his talk on “Participatory GIS: Empowering People with Location Information Using Mobile and Internet for Spatial Data”.

Dr. Nandini Bondale, Scientific Officer, School of Technologyand Computer Science, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai,delivered her talk on the topic “Learned Illiterates and Learning Machines”.Dr. Jitender Shah discussed about GIS and how it works. Dr. Nandani presentsthe challenges involved in speech and Natural Language Processing (NLP). Shediscussed about few important projects related to speech processing. She alsoshares some information related to currently on going Automated SpeechRecognition (ASR) for farmers. She concluded her talk with introduction tovarious areas for Research and Technology Development in this field.

After lunch second expert session was chaired by Dr. Jitendra Shah. This session was based on the theme “Research Directions”. In this session Dr. Vimal Bhatia from IIT Indore delivered a talk on “Introduction to Cognitive Radios” and discussed the various research opportunities in this field. Dr. Vikas Pareek from Banasthali University suggested various research directions in the field of Cryptography. Dr. Santosh K. Pandey, Scientist 'C',DeitY Ministry of Communication & IT, Government of India, discussed various facts related to impact factor as a quality measure of the research.

At the end of the expert sessions an interactive Q/A session was conducted. Many questions were asked by various participants.

On the second day of conference Mr. Siddartha Singh, Senior Technical Architect from Cvent, Gurgaon, delivered his talk on one of the very important topic i.e. Distributed Computing. During his talk he discussed aboutthe need and issues related to Distributed Computing.

In terms of number of research papers 150 research papers were received in response to the call of papers, from all across the India such as Haryana, Punjab, UP, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Rajasthan, etc. After a rigorous review by scientific committee 79 paper were selected, which are published in the conference proceeding.

Fourth research papers were presented in different technical sessions of two days on the major themes-Computer Network and Cryptography,Software Engineering, Cloud Computing, Distributed System, Soft Computing and Image Processing. -- technical posters based on conference theme were also presented by various participants. International Journal of Computer Applications (IJCA) also committed to publish selected papers of the conference in their journal.

The deliberations of the conference would come up with new research and innovations directions specifically in the field of Image Processing, GIS, Natural Language Processing, Speech Processing, Network Security and Distributed Computing.

On valedictory ceremony Dr. Sunil Sikka, AssistantProfessor, Amity University Gurgaon, delivered the entire conference report.The participants gave their feedbacks and were delighted to learn and exchange the ideas over the two days period of conference. The best poster awardees were awarded by Maj. Gen. V.K.Narang, Conference Director, Maj. Gen. G.S. Bal,Director Student Welfare, Dr. Gunjan M. Sanjeev, Director Foreign, Prof.(Dr.) Priti Singh, HOD ECE Deptt and Prof.(Dr.) Parveen Kumar, HOD CSE Deptt.

Finally, conference convener Ms. Charu Jain delivered vote thanks to each and every body who made this conference a big success.

Amity University conducted a Seminar on releases JOB STRESS AND WAYS TO HANDLE IT

Amity College of Nursing conducted a seminar on "Job Stress and Ways to Handle It" in VIMHANS, Hospital New Delhi dated on 18th February, 2015 as a part of the In-service Education Programme for Staff Nurses.

The programme was organized by Ms. Poonam Sharma, Assistant Professor and held under supervision of Ms. Anantha priya, Assistant Professor, Amity College of Nursing. The programme aimed at equipping the nursing personnel knowledge regarding the management of job stress.
The seminar started at 01:00 pm with the Welcome address by M s Daya Kumari (Post B.Sc. Nursing IVth Semester) to all the dignitaries and nursing staffs of the Hospital. The first presentation was given by Ms Ankita and preceded by Ms. Stella and ended by Ms. Sini. (B.Sc. Nursing VIII Semester students ) where they discussed about stress and stressors, types, effects of stress on human body , reasons for job stress and ways to handle it and other stress management techniques. It was followed by the demonstration of deep breathing exercises by Ms. Sini (B.Sc. Nursing VIII  Semester). Also the programme high lightened the essential tips to handle job stress which will help staff nurses in their real life situations. At the end, handouts on “Ten tips the nurses should do to avoid Job Burnout” also issued to the participants.

The post discussion session was conducted and all the questions or queries were answered. The participants expressed that the Seminar was very informative and highly beneficial to them.  The contents were fully covered and the methodology adopted was appropriate. Also participants were highly obliged and stated that this seminar as a need of the hour. They are looking forward for many more sessions like this in near future.

Thirty students of Noida International University also attended the session with great enthusiasm. While remarking about the programme, Mr.Vibin, Clinical Programme co-ordinator of Noida International University expressed that all sessions were really impressive.

The session ended at 02:30 pm with thanks giving to all the concerned persons & staff of the Hospital.

Prof Kovin Naidoo of International org for preventable visual deficiency, Africa went to Amity Unviersity Gurgaon

Prof. Kovin Naidoo, Board member and Director of Global Programs at the Brien Holden Vision Institute visited Amity University Gurgaon on 19/02/15 to deliver a Guest lecture on Preventable Blindness. He was accompanied by Mr. Vinod Daniel,CEO of India Vision Institute. Event was graced by H’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. P B Sharma and Prof(Dr) Mahavir Singh, Director - Amity Medical School. Prof Kovin is a distinguished educator, public health leader and researcher widely respected all over the world. He has done pioneering work in his efforts to eliminate avoidable blindness in the world .He is also the chairperson of International Agency for Preventable Blindness (Africa).

Prof. Kovin visited Amity to give a talk on “Prospects of Optometrists in the field of Public Health – A Global Perspective”. He said that as per the latest data, of the 223.4 million people with visual impairment in the world today, 32.4 million were blind and the rest had moderate to severe visual impairment. He emphasized that uncorrected refractive error is the second major cause of avoidable blindness in the world. He emphasized that optometrists can play a major part in solving this problem as they are qualified to prescribe spectacles and thus can eliminate the avoidable blindness caused due to it. He also mentioned that by the year 2020, 2.5 billion persons will be having myopia (minus refractive error). Mr Vinod Daniel talked about the role of India Vision Institute in furthering the cause of optometry, in India by providing technical support and resource materials. Dr PB Sharma, the Vice Chancellor of the University welcomed them and stressed that there is a lot of scope and promise in doing interdisciplinary research in optometry. He assured of all help in doing this at AUG. Maj Gen (Dr) Mahavir Singh, dean of the Medical School at Amity talked about the need to reduce avoidable blindness in the community. Prof Monica Chaudhry, HOD of Department of Optometry and Vision Science, Amity University thanked Prof Kovin and Mr Vinod Daniel for taking out time and visiting the university. Dr Sumit Grover, ophthalmologist from Gurgaon also took time out of his busy schedule to attend the talk. Prof. Kovin and Mr. Vinod Daniel then had an interaction with the students on their perspectives and experiences about optometry. They also clarified the doubts of the students regarding various options that were available after completing their education.This was followed by a visit to the
. There they admired the various facilities available in the clinic. They also appreciated the various models displayed by the students, especially the model eye made for retinoscopy and the near vision tester. The day ended with them promising to visit the Amity university again as soon as they could.

1038 Graduands Conferred with Degrees and Diplomas during the First Convocation of Amity University Gurgaon

 It was the much awaited and most cherished moment for the graduands of Amity University when they were conferred Degrees and Diplomas during memorable first Convocation 2015 at University Campus, Manesar.
 Dr.Ashok Chauhan – Founder President – Amity Group and Mr. Aseem Chauhan,Chancellor, Amity University Gurgaon and Prof. P B Sharma, Vice Chancellor, AUG conferred UG and PG Degrees and Diplomas to 1038 successfully qualified graduands for various programs.
 The Convocation procession, led by Piper Band, heralded the entry of venerated members of the management including Dr. Ashok K Chauhan- Founder President, Amity Group, Mr. Aseem Chauhan- Chancellor, Amity University Gurgaon, Ms. Amita Chauhan- Chairperson, Amity International Schools, Ms. Sapna Chauhan – Chairperson, AmiOwn PreSchools, distinguished Trustees and members of Management, Directors, Head of Institutions who walked the aisle, wearing impressive ceremonious gowns, much to the awe of the gathering.
 Graduands,accompanied with their family members and acquaintances, beamed with joy and exhilaration as they went down the memory lane, reminiscing college days while re-uniting with their friends, faculty members and Institution Heads. All the graduands donned beautiful black robes with caps and coloured scarves representing their programmes and they walked with pride and sparkle in their eyes.
 163 meritorious graduands received special Awards, Trophies, Medals and Salvers,wherein, 50 graduands were awarded with Gold Medals, while 49 students bagged silver medals, 45 Graduands were presented with bronze medal, and 12commendable graduands received trophy.
Mr.Aseem Chauhan- Chancellor, Amity University Gurgaon declared the Convocation open.
 Addressing the gathering, Prof PB Sharma- Vice Chancellor, Amity University Gurgaon welcomed the august gathering, and presented a brief report of the University. He outlined the achievements of the University of academic year 2013-2014 wherein he mentioned that Amity University Gurgaon  have succeeded in percolating the culture of research and innovations Prof. Sharma congratulated the graduands and wished them luck in their future endeavors.
 Sharing his views, Dr. Ashok K Chauhan- Founder President, Amity Group addressed Amity alumni as Amity’s Amazing Achievers and stressed that Amity alumni are empowered to change the country and the world. He remarked that Amity alumni are equipped with rich Indian culture and ethos which would help them to achieve anything in their lives. Dr. Chauhan, who himself believes in “Success by Compulsion”,called upon the Alumni to have an urge to achieve something in life, forge ahead with strong conviction, self confidence and faith in God, without getting perturbed by deterrents.
 During the occasion, Nobel Laureate Shri Kailash Satyarthi was conferred with Honoris Causa in Science for his extraordinary and far-sighted commitment to social emancipation with profound and exemplary contribution in pursuit of his long-cherished goal of ending child slavery.
 During his acceptance speech through video conferencing, Shri Kailash Satyarthi expressed his gratitude for the honor bestowed upon him. Encouraging the graduands to contribute towards development of nation, he said that the youth has to create a new type of 3D wherein the first D represents Dream which means to dream success in life with the dream of making India developed in the field of economy, knowledge and morality; the second D is Discover which means to identify the power within yourself and the third D is Do which means to do things immediately. He further added that when a person dreams about his career then the reach is limited but when a person dreams about the development of nation then his/her personality enhances and the person achieves success at great heights. Mr. Satyarthi opined that there is a need for democratization of knowledge, economy and moral values which will make India a superpower. He congratulated the graduands for their accomplishment and wished them success for their careers.
 In the convocation, Bharat Ratna Prof. CNR Rao, Head of the Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India was conferred with Honoris Causa in Science for his extraordinary scientific vision and unwavering commitment to the cause of the society.
 In his acceptance speech, Bharat Ratan Prof. CNR Rao said, “I am honored to receive the honoris causa from Amity University.” Enlightening the students with mantra of success,he said that if an Indian decides to succeed then he/she is destined to succeed.  He further added that a person who desires to succeed must follow three things which are dedication, doggedness and pugnacity. He cited the example of Mahatma Gandhi who had all the three qualities in him which led to the independence of the nation. Prof. Rao said that there is no limit to excellence and more a person works, more steps are added to the ladder of success. He also mentioned that world is changing at rapid pace and the competition level is very high with escalating demands of higher quality,therefore, the youth needs to prepare themselves for the tough struggle for success. Prof. Rao opined that the domain of Science and Technology is providing the foundation for future India, hence, there is a need for young people to climb this ladder of excellence.
 During convocation, Padma Vibhushan Dr. G. Madhavan Nair, former Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation and Secretary to the Department of Space, Government of India was conferred with Honorary Doctorate in Science for his exceptional scientific vision and profound commitment to India’s self reliance in space research and development.
Accepting the Honorary Doctorate in Science, Dr.G. Madhavan Nair expressed his gratitude for being included in the distinguished Honorary Doctorate recipients of Amity University. He further added that he had always stressed on the importance of research and innovation and he commended Amity for implementing the same in their University. He mentioned that India is a country with largest population of youth but quite often there is a deficit view of future, as most of the institutions are mass producing graduates or post graduates who want to be the employees of an organization, hence this situation needs to be changed. Dr. Nair apprised that over years India has achieved a lot in various fields, when there has been a clear set of objectives with focused energy and determination. He further encouraged the students to focus on innovation and research in whichever field they want to establish their career in.
 The convocation witnessed the conferring of Honorary Professorship on Dr. Kumar Krishen, Lead Technologist NASA Johnson Space Center Houston, US was conferred with Honorary Professorship for his visionary achievements in the field of scientific innovation and technology transfer; Dr. Fred P. Bemak, Professor,Counseling & Development Program at George Mason University was conferred with Honorary Professorship for his extraordinary academic achievements in the field of education and human development, and  Dr. Paroma Roy Chowdhury, Country Head, Corp Comm & Public Affairs, Google India was conferred with Honorary Professorship for her contribution in the field of Journalism and Mass Communication.
During the convocation, Mr. Aseem Chauhan announced to confer Honorary Professorship on Renowned Scientist Dr. Stephen C.Rand for his extraordinary achievements in the field of applied physics and optical science, when he will visit the University next month.
 During the convocation, the students of Centre of Robotics, Amity University presented a live demonstration of “Amibot – Human Robot” which showcased his dancing skills to the audience. The eminent personalities and scientists were impressed with the creation of the students.

Amity University Gurgaon and NSDC sign a MOU to collaborate on the skill development program

New Delhi: In line with the agenda of the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE) to scale up the skilling ecosystem in the country, National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and Amity University Gurgaon (AUG)signed a Memorandum of Understanding, to collaborate on providing vocational training at the college/university level.

This tie up aims at bridging the gap between the academia and industry and honing the job-related skills of the youth. The signing of this MoU is said to be the first of its kind in Haryana and is sure to contribute to the Government’s ‘Skill India’ movement. Amity University is amongst the few leading private sector universities with over 100 courses and is ranked No.1 private University in India.

The MoU was signed at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi by Mr. Dilip Chenoy, Managing Director & CEO, National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and Dr. P.B. Sharma,Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Amity University. Also present were senior officials Dr.Padmakali Banerjee, Pro Vice Chancellor & Dean Academics, AUG and Prof. (Dr.) Bhavana Adhikari, Deputy Dean, AUG.

Dilip Chenoy, MD & CEO, National Skill Development Corporation said,“In order to enhance the employability of the youth in our country, it’s important to introduce and scale-up vocational training at the school and university level. It is equally important to kindle the entrepreneurship spirit. This MoU will enable scale and integration of vocational training with students at the University level. We are happy to be a part of this collaboration with Amity University Gurgaon, to build a strong pool of skilled workforce in India.”

Speaking on the occasion, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of Amity Dr. P. B. Sharma, Amity University Gurgaon said, “We at Amity University are committed to produce industry ready professionals and the MoU with NSDC shall provide opportunities for excellent industry university co-operation.”

Dr. Padmakali Banerjee,Pro Vice Chancellor and Dean Academics, Amity University Gurgaon said that this MoU will further contribute towards realizing the Amity vision of integrating industry with the academic rigor which is a hallmark of academic programmes at Amity University Gurgaon.

Mr.Chenoy proposed that the students join this program as Amity will give them an added skill or an added qualification that will act as added certificate to their qualifications and will list them in the category of a certified profession. He shared his personal experience where he learnt carpentry in school which he can still do in time of leisure and as and when there is a critical need.

Amity University Gurgaon will be introducing these skill courses at the University to the students and working professionals. This initiative is seeing a lot of enthusiasm from the students. Amity will also introduce Bachelors in Vocational training to further integrate skill based programs with academics.

National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) is a unique Public Private Partnership (PPP),with 51 per cent equity held by private sector and the balance 49 per cent by the Union Government.
