Raahgiri raises awareness on women's safety, backs helmets

Raahgiri Day this week was a day of education, after a group of students performed a street play that stressed on the need for women to wear helmets, of the right kind, while riding two-wheelers.
Along with the 10-minute-long street play, the students also sang the parody of a popular song they had composed, "Zindagi ek safar hai suhana, helmet zaruri hai lagana". With the help of props, the street play educated people about the right kind of helmet a rider should wear to avoid injuries during accidents.
Nimisha Kapoor, 20, a visitor who enjoyed the performance, said, "It is an interesting way to grab attention of youngsters who attend Raahgiri Day."
Nineteen-year-old Arpit, who took part in the street play, felt women should not compromise on safety for fashion. "Women don't like to wear helmets because they feel it doesn't look good. I think they should be encouraged to care more about safety. It will surely make a difference," he said.
Another student, Sukanya, 21, said, "Not only should women wear helmets while riding, but also as pillion riders on two-wheelers. It is high time women became serious about their safety."
The performance was organized by students of Amity's School of Communication in Manesar.
It was followed by a signature drive to motivate citizens to vote in the upcoming assembly elections. S Venkateshwar of the election commission informed Gurgaonites of helpline numbers for information about their voting booth.

Distinguished Global Indian Speaker Series held at Amity University Gurgaon ,Haryana

Amity University Gurgaon felicitates the doyen of management, Prof. (Dr) S.P. Kothari, Deputy Dean and Gordon Y Billard Professor of Accounting and Finance, Director, MIT-India Program, MIT Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, U.S.A. at a glittering function organized on 28th Aug, 2014 for his distinguished contribution at this occasion.

The “Distinguished Global Indian Speaker Series” has been instituted at Amity University Gurgaon, Gurgaon to recognize the contributions of Indian Professors at premier foreign universities and organizations who through their meticulous work and dedication have not only achieved great heights in their professions but have also done the country proud. AUH is thankful to Hon’ble Shri Aseem Chauhan, Additional President, RBEF and Chancellor Amity University for extending his vision and support in instituting these series at this campus.

Prof. (Dr) S.P. Kothari delivered a special talk on “What should Modi do to spur India’s economy” at the prestigious Distinguished Global Indian Speaker Series instituted by Amity University Haryana. Prof (Dr) Kothari shared interesting and useful insights about the topic with the audience. As per him, things would change only if Mr. Modi’s administration can be a game changer and that it is not the size of the economy that matters but it is the Per Capita Income that is of more important.

Arresting population growth should be another focus area of the new government. It was quite insightful to hear that if monthly financial payments are tied to education and family planning, it is bound to give better results for curbing population explosion in the country.

The other important focus area that was highlighted was FDI. Various Asian countries have been benefited through massive FDI and that FDI is essential to achieve the double digit growth rates. An interesting highlight was that we should reward states and regulators on the basis of actual FDI obtained.

Another “out-of-the-box” thought was to re-divide India into at least 100 states so that governance can be made less central and more local.

Several other important issues were brought up – Privatizing the Public Sector, Enforcement of laws, reforming securities law, reduction in regulation, independence of monetary laws, focusing on future rather than undo the past, amongst others.

“In an era of globalization, it is absolutely essential for our University in India to give a global exposure to our students so as to prepare them to meet the challenges of the knowledge age. AUH has a strong focus on internationalization of educational programmes and also on strong industry interface.” -- said Prof. (Dr) P.B. Sharma, Vice Chancellor, AUH “Dr Kothari’s visit to AUH holds a special significance to AUH to strengthen its global connect with the top ranking Management Schools of the world, such as MIT Sloan School of Management at USA”-- said Prof. (Dr) Gunjan M Sanjeev, Director International Affairs, Amity University Gurgaon

The series was instituted on 9th July, 2014 with inaugural session delivered by Prof. Bhagwan Chowdhry, Anderson School of Management, University of California, Los Angeles, USA.
