Tourism management for students who want to tread new path

An increasing number of students are opting for career opportunities off the beaten path after graduating from high school. One such industry that promises the excitement of travel, meeting new people along with the potential of fast career growth is the tourism industry, which is increasingly drawing young aspirants.

Two reputable institutes in Gurgaon that provide a bachelor's degree in tourism management are Amity University Gurgaon and PG College in Sector 9.

"It is an interesting course. Students from any academic background can do it. The demand for qualified professionals in the tourism industry is going to increase. Global competition has made it essential for India to have well-trained professionals in this sector," says Dr Sushma Chaudhary, principal, PG College, Sector 9.

Dr Vikas Madhukar, admissions head, Amity University Gurgaon, agrees. "The travel industry offers great potential. That is the reason we were getting several inquiries about this course."

Amity University Gurgaon (Manesar), launched its BA course in tourism administration this year. The students are screened on the basis of a written English language test followed by a personal interview, while PG College will release a cut-off based on the 10+2 results. At Amity Manesar, the degree will be provided by Amity University, Haryana. PG College, on the other hand, is affiliated to the Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak.

The undergraduate programme equips students with professional knowledge of the tourism and other tourism-related industries such as hospitality and aviation.

Prerequisites

Good communication skills, proficiency in English, geographical knowledge, leadership skills and ability to work under pressure are the prerequisites for a good career in the tourism sector. Knowledge of a foreign language is a plus.

Job prospects

After completing the bachelor's degree, students can pursue an MBA in tourism or tourism administration. Students who prefer to work after the BA course can find jobs with travel agencies, airlines, cargo companies, travel consultancy services and the Ministry of Tourism. "We are close to Delhi, Gurgaon and Jaipur, all centres that have a burgeoning tourism industry. The course therefore offers good job potential for studentsin this region," says Madhukar.

Ready for tomorrow

At Amity University Gurgaon, innovation is the focus which underpins all activities. The university has been motivated to think out-of-the-box across verticals in order to help students be ready for tomorrow. Take for example the infrastructure, learning takes place in more than 131 spacious, amphitheatre-styled, air-conditioned classrooms. Students hone their skills in 180 hi-tech laboratories. There are several multi-cuisine restaurants, banks and 24x7 health clinics along with a hostel for 2,100 students inside the secure and 100 Mbps wireless campus. It also has a well stocked Knowledge Resource Centre and state-of-the-art auditoriums.

However, learning is not limited to the classrooms or laboratories. The Open Learning Area is digitally enabled to help students and faculty interact seamlessly. Recently a state-of-the-art studio by NDTV was set up on campus. The studio was established to help students pursuing broadcast journalism to get a feel of the real world of media. "After all, complete attention to details along with the ability to see the requirements of the future have been the hallmark of the university," said Aseem Chauhan, chancellor, Amity University Gurgaon

The university has got various awards including innovation in teaching pedagogy at the World Education Summit, Best University to use ICT in Education by Assocham and among Asia's Best Institutes by KPMG and WCRC 2014.

The innovative approach has led the university to put in place a Flexible Credit System -a cross disciplinary learning system, enabling students to design their own degree. This system offers 100 flexible credit courses across 23 institutions and is set to grow in the near future. For example, engineering students can choose a course each semester ranging from animation, fashion management, robotics and nano-technology, among others.

The result of this is reflected on the student achievements. Students have filed patents and research projects with agencies such as DST, DBT, BARC, among others. The Research Outreach Centres like the bio-diversity park, meteorology research facility, oceanic atmospheric science and technology and software technology park with remote incubation centre are designed for the future. In keeping with the motto to help students be ready for tomorrow, the university has centres of excellence dedicated towards financial analytics, BRICS studies, robotics, stem cell research, urban planning and management, among others.

The compulsory foreign language training programme is another curriculum modification. "In the age of MNCs, I believe, it is mandatory that students are equipped to succeed across the world. And language almost inevitably becomes the first barrier to overcome," added Chauhan.
